For the dummies, social bookmarking is the concept of sharing your favorite internet articles or websites with your friends and followers using social bookmarking services like Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, Delicious (Sadly getting scrapped by Yahoo!), Bebo etc. Social sharing is no different concept. The services like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut or any other social networking website where you share your favorite articles with your friends. To ease the process of sharing or bookmarking your articles on your blog or website, most of these services now provides smart buttons which can be integrated with one or two lines of code. The way twitter has evolved is fabulous and worth a praise. They became mainstream in a year or two. The aspect we are going to explore in this article is much talked “Twitter Revenue Model”. When everyone in internet business considers advertising as the biggest source of revenue, twitter chose it’s own path. Twitter grew exponentially because of the ease of use and innovative idea of social communication. Twitter recently raised funds at $1 Billion valuation. Web evangelist Robert Scoble went ahead saying Twitter is underhyped and is probably worth five to 10 billion dollars. Let’s dive deeper in to the cash piles and find pearls of wisdom.

When you post any new article on your blog, you want it to be fed to twitter account. You can do this easily and automatically with Twitterfeed.com. Now that’s not about Twitter Fail-Whale or twitter’s ridiculous downtime. Twitter is one great service with quite a few fuck ups. And this one matters most for me. Have you noticed ever that, there is no way to know for which profile or user name you are logged in? I mean look at the services including Google, Yahoo, AOL or Facebook. You can see your user name in the top right most corner of the page. And Twitter? No way. I have more than one twitter accounts. One for this blog @goospoos, one is my personal @divyang_patel and one of my other project @startupforum_in. Now ones I logged in with any one of these ids on twitter and start exploring profiles of friends and other people, I happily forgot for which account I am logged in. And I start following my personal contacts on my blog twitter id or startup twitter id or vice-versa.

Twitter saw peak in new user sign ups in July,2009. Since then new user sign ups are continuously decreasing. There were 9.4 million new user singups in July, 2009 compared to that of 7.1 million in Nov, 2009. Is twitter losing its charm? Look at the chart below for detailed statistics.

Twitter just rolled out very eagerly awaited list feature. Now you can make lists of your friends, family or any specific set of people you would like to see updates from. For sometime I really wanted to control the updates from the people I see on my Twitter page. My Twitter page get full of twitter updates from the people I don’t want to see daily when I login to my account. There was no way before. But with Twitter Lists, it’s very much possible to control (or say arrange for that matter) the updates I see. Let’s see how you can make the twitter lists and use them.

Last Wednesday, Twitter sold rights to both search giants Google and Microsoft (Bing) for indexing tweets in their search results. Both claims it to be revolutionary in terms of real-time search. Read their respective blog posts about deal at Google Blog and Bing Blog. It looks like Microsoft took lead over Google in the same day deal. As Microsoft representative quoted, “Bing would be the best way outside of Twitter’s own web site to find out what people are Tweeting. Bing will provide you Real Time tweet results.”

In the strategic move to gain the advantage of large tehcno-savvy Indian population, Twitter recently announced an exclusive deal with Bharti Airtel. Airtel is also promoting this deal prominently through advertising on various online newspaper editions as well as Television. See the Airtel campaign here. Airtel punchline for the campaign goes something like this “Share from anywhere. Twitter on SMS, only on Airtel”. Microblogging platform Twitter is now presenting you a new service in partnership with Jajah. Now you can make calls (literally!!) using Twitter. What will you call it? MicroCalling? Yeah maybe, because the time-limit for each call is maximum 2 minutes.
