How to Search For a File into ZIP (or other archive)
Playing with ZIP or other archives like RAR, TAR, JAR, CAB, WAR or EAR gets tricky unless you know how to deal with it. After exploring various options for searching for a file in multiple archives, including windows search, I zeroed on WinRAR. It has very powerful search capabilities on top of easy availability and ease of use. It can search not only filenames inside ZIP but can also search text inside ZIP. Please note, WinRAR supports more archive types than what I have mentioned. Let’s take a brief look on WinRAR Search Capabilities,
a) To search for a file inside ZIP (or other archive)
- Browse to the location where search needs to be performed. It can be any folder or archive file.

- Click on ‘Find’ to open the Search Dialog and enter necessary fields.

- And the result is,

b) To search for a text inside ZIP (or other archive)
Suppose I want to list all the files under C:\Archive_Search_TEST which contains word ‘Apache License’,
1. Give inputs as per requirement,
2. WINRAR searches inside everything under C:\Archive_Search_TEST and the result is,
The only limitation with WINRAR search is, it cannot search inside archive within another archive. Let me know if you face any difficulties while following the instructions.
