Why Windows Phone

Recently I bought Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone OS powered smartphone. I was a big fan of iPhone and considering to buy one before Nokia Lumia 800 came out. I was on the verge to buy iPhone but couldn’t because of some personal situations. And then one day I got promotional email of Nokia Lumia 800. From that day onwards I watched every video available for Nokia Lumia 800. I read every blog post, many forums and tons of news before I made the decision to go with Nokia Lumia 800 then to move to iPhone. So if you are still confused between Windows Phone and iPhone, you can read the conclusions of my heavy research before I made my decision. Hope this enlightens some of you.
My Considerations And Needs From The Phone
1) It should have good camera. I’m hobbyists photographer (Who’s not)
2) Not too big. Anything more then 4 inches is not mobile, it’s tablet. Period.
3) Should look not just beautiful but sexy (Yup, I like my gadgets that way)
4) Should have good apps.
5) Internet browsing should be very good ( I do a lot )
6) And anything that normal mobile has; like good call quality, reception, messeging etc.
I’m a techie and I use my phone heavily for lot of tasks. So anything shitty doesn’t stand a chance with me. So coming back to our talk, why I chose Windows Phone. As I wrote earlier, I was consuming every news, video, forum and blog post to see whether selecting Windows Phone is really a choise. And after lot of wait, build-up and excitement, I finally bought the Nokia Lumia 800. After using it for almost 3 weeks, I’m writing up this to tell why I’m (and my friends) falling in love with this device and OS.
What I Got
1) The device is sexy (Yes, this is not marketing bullshit. I stand by what I say). I almost fell in love with it. I was admiring its built, look and feel more then one should do with gadgets.
2) It’s 3.7 inch screen. Slightly larger then iPhone and enough for a mobile device.
3) Screen is crisp, vibrant and outright beautiful with ClearBlack technology. You can see many videos on Yoututbe comparing this phone with iPhone where it clearly can be seen that display of Lumia is better then iPhone.
4) It has 8MP camera ( iPhone 4S has 8MP too). The camera takes wonderful images and videos. I think the point and shoot cameras will extinct in near future.
5) The original question Why Windows Phone is still hanging around. For that,
6) The Metro UI is truly a refreshing feel. Microsoft has done remarkable job inventing totally new look and feel to mobile OS. I was Microsoft critic for what it has done with browser and Windows OS in general. But after the experience of Windows Phone 7 OS, I certainly believe that things are changing at core level. After 3 weeks of Windows Phone OS experience, when I look at my friend’s iPhone UI, it seems old and outdated.
7) Scrolling works up and down which is natural for portrait primary devices. UI transition is zap. Works awesomely. 3D UI transitions look amazing.
8 ) Live Tiles are good. It brings lively experience to the whole OS. I see pictures chaning on my home screen “Pictures” Tile. I see social updates in “People” Tile and “Me” Tile.
9) The best thing about Windows Phone 7 OS is, it provides lots of things out of the box. Like Facebook and Twitter integration. I don’t need to download and install any app to do that. They just work out of the box. I added the account once and it was there with latest updates, photos and everything I need from my social media.
10) Another best out of the box feature is Microsoft Office Mobile. For any professional or entrepreneur, office software is must on phone. Any decent Office software on other platforms (iOS or Android) will cost you lot of bucks. Microsoft Office on Windows Phone works just like your PC Office suite.
11) You can add any number of email accounts say Gmail, Yohoo Mail or any other mail account.
12) You can add any number of Social Networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc and it will integrate well with People Hub.
13) Outlook Sync. It’s just easy because they are siblings you know. Good for business and executive people.
14) XBOX Live. Do you love games then this is the feature for you. Though I don’t own XBOX, there are plenty of videos available online which shows integration of XBOX with this feature. (Citation Needed!!!)
15) Messaging Hub is also a good feature. It shows threaded conversations. If you stop SMSing with some person and started Facebook messaging with him/her. That too will show in Messaging Hub in the same thread of the SMS.
16) Pictures and Videos can be shared on social networks from there itself.
17) Apps : I really don’t care if platform has 50K apps or 5 Lac apps. Does it have apps I need? Yes Windows Phone marketplace has all the apps I need. From top publishers of course. I use The Weather Channel, Kindle, Adobe Reader, Evernote, Flickr, IMDB, Pulse, ShopSavvy, Slacker Radio, TuneIn Radio, Translator and of course Youtube. Do I feel like left out. Nope.
18) skyDrive. Heard about cloud computing? It works in my Phone without installation of any sort. I can store documents, pictures, notes and any other stuff in the skyDrive. It’s 25 GB account free cloud space.
19) Internet Explorer 9 : I use Firefox and Chrome on my PC but on my phone IE9 is good with no issues at all. And it supports HTML5!
I can go on about Windows Phone, but I leave it to you to find out more…! Final point. I got all these features and beautiful device ( Nokia Lumia 800 is more beautiful then iPhone. I dare. ) at around 30000 INR. But with same features, iPhone 4S costs me 45000+ (Don’t tell me about Siri. It’s overrated!!). And hey, it doesn’t crash!!
I conclude “Why Not Windows Phone?“

Your note on Outlook sync is not accurate: it is not easy to sync WP7 with Outlook (Desktop version without exchange server): first you have to install hotmail connector, then copy or move contacts & calendar items to new locations for it to be sync with Windows Live. It is not a total sync as it does not sync categories, contact photo etc. Tasks is still not sync to WP7…If you have checked on the web, there are many business users frustrated over this oversight by Microsoft.
