Bring The App Experience To Your Windows Desktop With Pokki
HTML5 is quickly becoming the web standard for amazing interactions on the Internet, but little has been done to bring this experience to the Windows desktop until now. Pokki is a HTML5 app that lets you interact with most of your web apps through its beautiful interface. Developers can built feature rich, connected desktop applications using HTML5 and other latest web standards. Individual services are called “Pokkis” and each Pokki is dedicated to a specific service. The program sits on your task bar where the Quick Launch bar would normally sit and functions more beautifully than any Quick Launch bar designed by Microsoft.
Using Pokki
When you first install Pokki, you can opt to install several Pokkis for services you probably use every day. The Gmail app is extremely well designed and features incredible usability, while the Twitter app brings you feeds, mentions, and lists straight to your fingertips in an easy to read format. Other Pokkis exist for your daily interactions, including one for RSS feeds, Facebook, eBay, and others.
You can add and remove Pokkis with a quick touch of a button and any updates that your Pokkis receive while active will be displayed in the form of a notification badge on the Pokki icon, similar to what mobile users are familiar with when a mobile app has an update. Your Pokkis can also be dragged and dropped within their launch bar so you can arrange them according to how you want them.
Quick List of Features
* Access popular sites like Gmail, Facebook, & Twitter from your desktop
* Minimal design goes with any desktop setup
* Clean up your browser by removing tabs and accessing sites through Pokki
* Sleek RSS aggregator groups feeds together according to subject matter
* Open API for developing your own Pokkis
* Completely free

Developers & Pokki
The best part about Pokki is that it is an open platform that anyone can develop apps for. Web developers who have experience writing HTML5, CSS, & Javascript could write a Pokki for any web application that allows for the appropriate API and then distribute the Pokki to other users on the Pokki store. Currently most of the Pokkis available are designed by the team behind the whole project, but with an open platform available if Pokki sees a wider adoption rate then third party developers could potentially create something used by hundreds of thousands of people.
Currently Pokki is only available for Windows 7 users. Windows Vista and XP support are slated for release sometime this month. Mac OS X support is planned for release sometime later this year.

Nice Pokki write up!
We just released an update with Windows XP and Vista support, and launched new two music Pokkies – Grooveshark and Rdio.
We also launched a $50K Pokki Challenge.
There are no trackbacks to display at this time.
