Social Media Statistics India
Social media has drastically changed the way we communicate to each other. Not just that, ‘Social Media‘ has no longer confined to merely being a communication platform, rather it has now become a virtual world online where people come, become friends, develop relationship, form gangs, listen music, play games and much more. India too has not remained untouched with such an evolution of social media. In India most popular social media sites are ‘Facebook’, ‘LinkedIn’, ‘Orkut’, YouTube’ and ‘Twitter’. And their number of registered members are increasing at a mind boggling rate.
So today it has become all the more important for Businesses and brands to use social media tools to market their product or services. But to use these tools, you will need to have correct stats and info with you to start with. In this article I am trying to give you the stats of almost all social media sites.
But before I start to tell you about the stats of social media site, let us have a look upon some of the facts of Indian internet market :-
- India is the Third Largest Internet Market in the world ( after USA and China) and also fifth largest online video market. Number of videos posted from India in the last two months were more than what the largest TV network of U.S produced in its history of 72 years.
- India has 100+ million unique internet users and they spend around 16 hours a week online. Out of the 100 million users, 40 million access from office and the rest 30 million access from cyber cafes and 30 million access internet from home.
- Google recorded 20 times growth in search queries coming from India over the last 5 years.
- 30 percent of the entire air travel booking in India is done online.
Following is the site wise details of social media usage in India:-
Facebook has hardly left any country in this world untouched and India too has not remained untouched from it. Facebook has over 30 million active registered users in India and that is more than population of Australia!!! And it has penetrated just 3 percent of the entire population. Number of Facebook users in India have gone up by 60 percent in the last six months.
Of all Facebook users in India 48 percent users are of age group 18-24 and 28 percent users are of age group 25-34, 72 percent users are male and 28 percent users are female.
Out of all 35+ million mobile internet users in India, 42% of users access Facebook through their mobiles. And with Facebook offering more and more sophisticated mobile features, this figure is all set to shoot the sky. Facebook recorded a staggering 1608% growth on YOY in its market share since April 2010.
Twitter is also gaining popularity in India, since 2010 it has recorded 191% increase in its market share in India. Twitter has over 9 million active registered users in India. One of the thing I like about Twitter is that, it is primarily designed to make any news or message to go viral and that makes it perhaps the best place to market your products/services and it is more likely to go viral than on any of the other social media site.
All seems good of Twitter in India, but when it comes to following each other, known as ‘Following”, 36 percent of Indian Twitter users just do not follow any other account.
On an average Indian twitter users have 88 updates which is higher than average Canadian users updates. Considering level of internet penetration in India as compared to Canada, Twitter is here to stay and grow more rapidly in India than in any other country.
With more than 12 million users in India, Linkedin cant be taken lightly, particularly when it comes to target your corporate B2B product or some corporate schemes or any product. India alone accounts for more than 14 percent of users of Linkedin.
More than 35 percent users of Linkedin are from engineering background which clearly shows that Linkedin is a fully dedicated social networking site meant for professionals. People of age 35 or more contribute to nearly 70 percent of the total users. So if your product/service is for youngsters then this site is just not for you.
Youtube and Orkut
Although Orkut is on declining stage, but its importance in social media field can’t be ruled out, particularly in India. With 21 million users India accounts for more than 20 percent of total users that Orkut has. 54 percent of total users are of the age 18-25 years. Apart from India, Orkut is also used a lot in Brazil which alone accounts for more than 50 percent of its users.
Youtube, with its 300 million users globally, stands as world’s largest video sharing site. Each minute 48 hours of video is uploaded on Youtube. India accounts for 6 percent of total traffic to Youtube, considering total amount of traffic on Youtube, ’6%’ is certainly a significant figure.
Other Networks
MySpace: Myspace has now become more of a music social networking site. It has strong presence in US and 80 percent of its total users are from US alone. With more than 150 million users worldwide, this site can prove instrumental in promoting your product/service in US, particularly if it is related to entertainment in some way or other.
Hi5: It has embarked its name as one of the best online gaming social networking sites. Almost 130 new social games are added each week. If you have anything related to gaming that you want to advertise, then nothing can be better than Hi5, as this site is meant for gamers.
Google Plus: Google has claimed that it has around 100+ million users in India and if that is the case then certainly Facebook has now a competitor. But still its too early to comment. We will have to wait and see how these sites progress with time.
So that’s it for social media statistics in India. If you’ve any other interesting insights then share them in comments.
