I recently bought Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex ultra-portable external hard drive (HDD) of 500GB of capacity. My aim was to backup my important files and folders to some external device so that in case of my dear Windows 7 powered Dell lappy fails somehow, I don’t lose my important data with. Though I used to take backups on DVDs but that was not regular and was not segregated properly. So external HDD seemed best option. After some research online and reference from my friends I decided to buy Segate FreeAgent GoFlex which cost me INR 3050 from a local store. I expected it to work as out of the box solution, but that was not the case with it. There were numerous problems I faced before I get started to taking backups. Let’s see those problems one by one and how I found solution for them.
1) By default C drive is selected to be backed up.
Give me a break. I don’t want to back up my C: drive buddy. I will select what I want to back up because my important files are somewhere else. So just goto the “Advanced Options” and remove the C: drive from backup plan.
2) Memeo Instant Backup Drag and Drop not working!
Ok that’s pretty pathetic for the first time user. I just removed C: drive from my back up plan. And now when I try to Drag and Drop any other folder or drive to the Advanced Options backup plan, it won’t let me do it. I’ll get the black restricted sign when I try to drag and drop. If you’re thinking that Memeo Forums will help you resolve the problem, you’re screwed. Because the forum thread which discusses this problem is removed by the Memeo Team ( Bravo Memeo! ). See the original post link here. But fortunately Google Cache came to rescue. It had the whole discussion thread cached which can be found here. It’s really bad on the part of Memeo Team to remove such important thread. Can somebody replicate that thread somewhere so that if Google Cache expires, the thread remains safe. The solution to this is, you should install the latest version of Memeo Instant Backup i.e. 188.8.131.5276. Though it won’t solve problem in the first place after you update or install the new version. You should reboot the machine to get it working.
3) Memeo Instant backup to the wrong drive
After I resolved drag & drop problem and started to backup my important folders with HDD hooked up to USB. But when I looked at where my files are being backed up, I was amazed to see them on the other drive on my lappy only. So actually no files were being backed up on Seagate HDD. I googled it a little and found this thread. It is suggested that, remove the existing backup plan from “Actions” menu. Make a new backup plan with correct destination (in our case it’s your external HDD ). This worked for me and hopefully will work for you too.
So that’s how I finally get the Seagate external HDD and Memeo Instant Backup working correctly. In my opinion, these things are meant for end users who are not tech-savvy and should work out-of-the-box. But that’s not the case.
