5 Essential Skills That Make You Successful Internet Entrepreneur

Mark Zuckerberg Of Facebook

The explosion of the web did two things for entrepreneurs: it gave everyone a platform to share their vision and business to the world but opened the flood gates for unlimited competition. To be an entrepreneur, this day and age, doesn’t take a masters in Business; in fact, you may already have a majority of skills required to launch you first online business – today!

Although each of the following is up for debate; I believe these five items are the most essential to the modern Internet entrepreneur.

#1: Strategy

Strategy, as a whole, plays a monumental role for entrepreneurs of the web. Whereas before, you could take a look around your neighborhood and see a void which gave you an opportunity for business – you now must compete on a global level; one which there may be dozens of others in your niche already thinking about the same business you plan to launch.

Strategy, at its core, does three amazing things for you:

  • Reveals who your business connects with
  • Keeps you focused on doing the most valuable actions throughout your day
  • Develops a logical progression of your business

The most successful entrepreneurs are the ones which have a grande vision and mission for their business. Sure, some jump into a venture which eventually explodes in popularity but every day people, such as you and me, need to see where we’ll be going in the near future.

A strategy will keep you focused so your business targets the exact type of customer that will buy from you. Your product development will avoid the dreaded ‘creep’. You’ll manage your time effectively because you see where you must go. You will develop a systematic approach to your business which can later be applied to additional ventures of the future.

#2: Communication

Believe it or not, how you present yourself to others and the language you choose has a significant impact on your business venture. You’ll often hear “you only get to make the first impression” but there is a massive amount of subtle elements of your presentation that you may not have a sound understanding on: communication.

Communication is an essential skill for the modern Internet entrepreneur for two reasons:

  • You will be able to effectively speak to your desired audience
  • You will easily convey the benefits of your business, products or services

Even your greatest content may fail to sell your business because you aren’t speaking on terms with your desired customer. You should be able to refine and craft a perfect pitch for your business because that’s how you’re going to get others excited to work with you.

Try speaking about your business to a fellow entrepreneur even if it’s just 10 minutes a day. Get on Skype and present your business as if you were trying to land a client. Over time, you’ll refine your communication so you can best tell the benefits without wasting another’s time while simultaneously cut through the fluff to create an impact.

#3: Web Development

Web development will be the most debated of all of the skills I’ve mentioned within this post. The reason why web development makes this list is that understanding how the web works will solve many problems you’ll face along the way.

Here are some of the reasons why understanding the development of a website is important:

  • You will thoroughly understand best practices for the web
  • You’ll make decisions based on effectiveness rather than ‘feeling’
  • You will have the knowledge to make quick changes when need be
  • You’ll further understand why and how people discover your business

You don’t have to be a web design wiz; a basic knowledge of web development will suffice. However, if you spend enough time building your business from the ground up than the development of your website will be a very important element – understanding why your site is crafted in a particular fashion will ensure that you’re effectively communicating to your market (see how that works?).

Additionally, if you choose to outsource, you’ll be able to accurately describe what you need your website to do rather than hope for the best when handing off an overview to your designers.

#4: Networking

Call it ‘kissing ass’ but the connections you make with other individuals in your market play one of the most crucial skills you must develop as an Internet entrepreneur – if not the most important.

You can only go so far with the promotion and exposure of your business by yourself. It takes your network to penetrate additional sections of the market that you can’t reach. Additionally, your network further solidifies your authority within your niche which gives you the edge over competition that seal themselves up within their own, little world.

Networking is based on a single timeless element: Sharing equal value between both parties.

Once you ‘get your foot in the door’ with whom you wish to build a connection; it’s up to you to deliver incredible value to the other to keep you on their radar. In a lot of ways, you are ‘kissing ass’ to make the connection but over time you will both begin to reach a level where value is traded between one another.

Think of the ‘steps’ you took to develop your best friends. You initiated contact, you shared something of value, you showed genuine interest in the other and the friendship eventually came to light. Repeat this with your online connections and you’ll build a network so powerful that your next business launch will start off with a BANG!

#5: Content Creation

The way modern, Internet business works has taken a shift. In actuality, content has always been the underlying factor that made the current successful online businesses what they are today; it’s only taken until recently for many other businesses to take this hint.

Your ability to create content plays a variety of massive importance:

  • You will show your authority in your niche based on the value you deliver to the community
  • You will create sustainable web presence in search engines, social media and buzz
  • You create an incredible support back-end to answer common questions for new leads
  • You set yourself a part from your competition (who may not be doing content creation, at all)

The current buzzword for all of this is ‘content marketing’. Let what you share with the world be what markets your business rather than bombarding others with advertising messages.

Content creation, however, can be difficult for those that have trouble writing but there are many other vehicles such as video production and audio recording that are available. All-in-all, content opens an opportunity for each of the above items from strategy to networking.

Final Thoughts

No doubt, you’re going to hear a slew of ‘essentials’ that every entrepreneur must understand prior (and during) their business development but the five that has been listed in this post, from my experience, have been the items that allow most entrepreneurs to break down the wall and finally get found.

The beauty of it all is that each of these items plays into one another. In many ways, you become forced to pick up slack in each of these as you learn another. You begin to become well rounded which eventually reveals an overall process and strategy which can be applied to any new venture you may have on the web. Master these basics and the world is yours.

Agree? Disagree? Share your opinions on what elements of entrepreneurism is the most important to an individual in this day and age.
